Severance Middle School Addition

Originally designed by RB+B, Severance Middle School opened in 2009 as a 6th through 8th grade facility for 600 students, with planned future additions to increase the total capacity to 900 students. The current student population exceeds 750 and some classes are housed in modular buildings on site. As part of Weld Re-4’s 2022 bond measure, the district is moving forward with the planned academic and athletic additions.

A new academic pod will add 12 core classrooms, a large music suite, and support spaces. The design of the pod closely matches the existing pods, which are working well for the school. A new auxiliary gym will take scheduling pressure off the main gym and allow city recreation leagues to use the space without accessing the rest of the school. An enlarged weight room will provide space for (8) power racks. The existing cafeteria will expand into the former band classroom to increase capacity to 300 students. A new secure entry vestibule will bring the school in line with district standards. New “bridge infills” will partially fill-in existing two-story spaces to provide a more intuitive circulation path on the second level.
