Northeastern Colorado Health Department

Since 1948, NCHD has been proudly serving six counties in the northeastern corner of the state: Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma. Just over 40 staff members cover these 9,200 square miles of territory from six different office locations (one in each of the six counties). NCHD’s mission is to promote healthy behaviors, protect against environmental hazards, and prevent injury and disease.

The organization’s current facility has numerous inadequacies: it’s too small, lacks sufficient parking, lacks comfortable and welcoming space, and does not represent the environment that NCHD wishes to provide to their clients. In response to these challenges, NCHD is proposing a new facility on a new 1.3-acre site in Fort Morgan. The facility will help the organization to deliver preventative health care services to the public, accommodate special materials storage and testing, provide offices for both full- and part-time staff, as well as deliver flexible meeting space.

LOCATION: Fort Morgan, CO
CLIENT: Northeastern Colorado Health Department
SCOPE: New 13,000 SF Facility
COST: Estimated $8 Million
COMPLETED: Pending Fundraising

The 13,000 SF two-story building is rectangular in shape—narrow in the north-south direction and long in the east-west direction—to maximize natural daylighting. As one enters the building, they are greeted by a bright, welcoming two-story lobby and waiting area. Public space, meeting rooms, and service spaces are all accessed by the first floor. Two levels of exam rooms, consultation rooms, and offices encompass the east two-thirds of the building.

The design intent was to create a clean and contemporary appearance using a variety of materials that break down the scale of the building and are natural in appearance. Glass, natural stone veneer, pre-cast concrete accents, and wood look siding are all part of the building’s facade. Inside the building, simple materials and colors assist with identification and wayfinding.
