High Plains P-8 Addition

Designed in 2015 by RB+B, the original facility—which supports grades preschool through 8—had reached capacity and needed to expand. This project added an additional 30% of space to the school, including nine additional classrooms (three on the main level and six upstairs) plus support rooms for a new gymnasium and a new music room. Two kindergarten rooms were expanded and then reconfigured into three separate rooms in the north wing. The existing gym and music room were transitioned to use by elementary students only while the new gym addition and music space serve the middle schoolers.

The site was restricted by numerous variables. Several utilities enter the site from the east and a dedicated park is used for the City of Loveland to the northeast. The existing geothermal field was located to the north, which also couldn’t move. The design solution included sinking the gym elevation several feet to create a nice sunken courtyard. To the west of the addition is a plaza with container gardens.
