RB+B, serving as Design Architect to Casper-based Amundsen Associates, began working with the City of Douglas Design Advisory Group (DAG) in June 2024. Previously completed conceptual design work was used as a base to reflect the current DAG group’s thoughts on project scope. Analysis of past designs and discussions helped refine the project goals.
In order to maximize the facility’s usefulness to the community, the DAG created a master plan that looked at future expansion and how the greater site could be developed into a regional park and anchor for community activity. The building also provides opportunities to promote community arts and culture.

As a community hub where many functions intersect, the layout is centered around an interior plaza connecting all the major spaces within the building. With a “town plaza” feel, the space fosters social interactions while functioning as the primary circulation space. A portion of the space is designated for pool tables intermixed with furniture and also serves as an informal art gallery.
The gymnasiums take up nearly two-thirds of the footprint, consisting of three basketball courts, bleachers, and large storage. A running track floats above, following the perimeter of the gym. Daylight is brought into the facility through large windows from the north and south.
